Fortunately PP014 isn't too common. PP014 is about people who make age assumptions that are way waaaaay off!
This comes up right now because, of course, it happened recently. Checking Harriett in at ER the registration lady asked who I was. This usually comes as the question, "And how are you related?" to which our standard reply is, "We're family." And that's usually all they want to know.
Not this time, nope! She looked at Harriett and then me and then asked me, "Are you her daughter?" GAH!!!
Aside from the obvious black/white issue - which I can overlook because there are so many blended families - we are both in our 50's. It would be physically impossible for me to be her daughter! I felt horrible for Harriett, and I hope it just went by her without her noticing. It's hard enough being so sick without being insulted, too.
Let's go back a couple dozen years to when I was engaged to my hubby. We were out shopping for a ski jacket. We'd wandered the store a couple of rounds holding selections up for each other when a salesman came to help us. I moved off, continuing to look while Mr. Sales worked with hubby. As I moved back toward them I could hear the Mr. Sales saying, "What did you think about the one your mom held up over there?" Okay, I am a little bit older than my hubby but not that much!! That was the exact moment Mr. Sales lost our business!
A few years later I was recounting this story at the daycare while picking up my children. One of the other moms shared hers. She'd taken her infant son to the doctor and the nurse there was cooing over him and said, "Aren't you the lucky little fella! Your Grandma gets to bring you to the doctor today!" How do these people manage to do this?
Please, you must have some stories, too - share!!
