The Jackson County School Board will be discussing a teacher who was reassigned after writing a racial epithet about Sen. Barack Obama on a classroom board.
The School Board meeting will be 6 p.m. Eastern time at the district office, 2903 Jefferson St., Marianna.
It happened in late September. Teacher Greg Howard wrote a racially-motivated interpretation of a commonly used phrase in the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.
The Marianna Middle School teacher wrote the words "C.H.A.N.G.E. – Come Help A (N-word) Get Elected" on a dry-erase board in his classroom, according to Larry Moore, deputy superintendent for the Jackson County School District.
Howard, who's been teaching in the district for 17 years, wrote the comment during a seventh-grade social studies class that included 17 white students, six black students and one Asian.
Howard was suspended with pay while school officials investigated. His reprimand was elevated to a 10-day suspension without pay and he was required to write a letter of apology to students. He will also be reassigned to teach in the district's Adult Education Program.
However, NAACP leaders and some parents believe that punishment is not enough. They are asking that Howard be fired.
Another teacher is under investigation after the district received a race-related complaint Oct. 6. Moore said the complaint has not been corroborated.
